What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that means your bones are weak, and you're more likely to break a bone. Since there are no symptoms, you might not know your bones are getting weaker until you break a bone!

A broken bone can really affect a woman's life. It can cause disability, pain, or loss of independence. It can make it harder to do daily activities without help, such as walking. This can make it hard to participate in social activities. It can also cause severe back pain and deformity.

What bones does osteoporosis affect?

Osteoporosis is due to gradual loss of bone mass. It leaves our bones porous and fragile and subject to increased risk of fractures. It can also lead to disfigurement of the back. A major cause of osteoporosis is reduced levels of estrogen. Osteoporosis is easier to prevent than treat. Weight bearing exercise and getting enough calcium and Vitamin D can help reduce the risk. Hormone balancing before, during and after menopause can also help prevent bone loss and maintain bone health.

Joint pain.

Aging and lack of lubrication in the joints may make you feel achy. This is also a time of life when some women develop osteoporosis, an inflammation of the joints.

What you can do. Exercise! To keep all systems working smoothly, it's important to move every day. Swimming and yoga are both great types of exercise for achy joints. Treat yourself to a massage or get a loved one to do it every once in a while.

Loss of bone density.


Estrogen helps to remodel bone so that new cells replace old ones and bones remain strong and dense. During and after menopause, there is less bone turnover, which means that bones may become brittle and can break more easily.

What you can do: Take a daily calcium supplement. The recommended daily intake is 1000 mg, but most women after menopause require 1200 mg to 1500 mg of calcium each day. Your healthcare provider may recommend a bone density scan (a non-invasive test that gauges how much bone you may have lost and how likely it is to fracture). If you do have low bone density, your healthcare provider may prescribe treatment. And exercise is vital to keeping bones strong!

Osteoporosis can happen to any of your bones, but is most common in the hip, wrist, and in your spine, also called your vertebrae. Vertebrae are important because these bones support your body to stand and sit upright.

Osteoporosis in the vertebrae can cause serious problems for women. A fracture in this area occurs from day-to-day activities like climbing stairs, lifting objects, or bending forward.

- Sloping shoulders

- Curve in the back

- Height loss

- Back pain

- Hunched posture

- Protruding abdomen

What things cause me to have a higher chance of getting osteoporosis?

Things that can increase your chances of developing osteoporosis include:

- being female

- small, thin body (under 127 pounds)

- family history of osteoporosis

- being postmenopausal or of an advanced age

- Caucasian or Asian race, but African American and Hispanic women
also at significant risk for developing the disease

- abnormal absence of menstrual periods or having an eating disorder,
such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia that can cause menstrual periods to
stop before menopause, and loss of bone tissue from too much
exercise

- a diet low in dairy products or other sources of calcium and vitamin D

- inactive lifestyle

- long-term use of medicines prescribed for many diseases, including
arthritis, asthma, and lupus, anti-seizure medications; gonadotropin
releasing hormone for treatment of endometriosis; aluminum-containing
antacids; certain cancer treatments; and excessive thyroid hormone

- cigarette smoking and drinking too much alcohol

How can I find out if I have weak bones?

There are tests you can get to find out your bone strength, also called bone density. There are also other types of bone strength tests too. Talk with your doctor or nurse about which type of test is best for you.

If you weigh less than 154 pounds, and don't take estrogen, get a bone density test. Don't wait until age 65. You have a higher chance for breaks.

Do you think burning off 3,500 calories per day will mean that you lose a pound of fat?

Actually, calories can come from a variety of sources. There are calories that come from fat, protein, carbohydrates and alcohol. If you can burn off 3,500 calories in some form of exercise, there is no guarantee you will be burning 100% calories from fat. In fact, most of the time you are burning calories from sugar or carbohydrates because they are the easiest and most accessible types of fuel in your body. Your liver holds glycogen stores for just the kind of need that exercise requires. Therefore, the best way to eliminate body fat is for your body to want to release it. That is why diet is 80 to 85% of a weight management program! Exercise is a part of the equation too; however, it should be in balance by doing it daily, not too rigorous, not too fast or not too slow.

How do you choose the dietary supplements?

What does health really mean? What does wellness really mean? What is the motivation to have health?

We don’t think about health until we don’t have it. Is health the absence of a sickness or a disease name? Or do you even fall in to the parameters to have a health care professional label you with a disease name?

You have health when your organ systems are healthy. They can only be healthy when the tissues that make them up are healthy. The cellular molecular structures that make up the organs ultimately make up you! It’s a renewing process.

To have vibrant health and wellness is to supply the ingredients that the body uses to create those cells and molecules. A deficiency in cell structure someplace in the body creates a deficiency of function.

Health is the optimization of those structures. Create cells to create the tissues and support the organs optimally and support the body functions optimally.

Pollutants have caused a lot of stress on our bodies and will continue to cause oxidative stress on our body and on our immune system. There are tens of thousands of chemicals all over the planet and are hazardous to your health. You’re under that stress regardless of where you live. You need to compensate for the change.

If I don’t have any symptoms of illness and I have energy I must be well. No! Not necessarily! A doctor associate one time told me the only way to be sure you are healthy is to have an autopsy.

You need to be eating the right foods. The foods your body was designed to eat. There are all kinds of food you should be eating that are necessary for wellness.

Right now we are in an epidemic of people being overweight. Why?

Choosing the wrong foods! Foods we eat are high in calories and low in nutritional value by weight.

We also are in to low fat dieting. These foods are low fat and low cholesterol and should be the correct way to eat. To do that company’s started to manipulate natural molecules to taste better even though the fat had been removed. These foods were made to say on the label low fat and low cholesterol. To make them taste better even though the fat and cholesterol had been removed. Thus, they didn’t make the food healthier. They sold better.

Are we getting thinner as a Nation? No! This is the proof of pre-packaged low fat foods. Every year as a group our population is getting fatter. People are desperate for answers. Our health care costs are going up. Why? Because our population is getting less healthy every year! It’s driving the cost up. Our population isn’t healthy. If what we are doing is correct we should be getting thinner as a Nation.

We are driving the cost of health care through the roof. We can get health care costs under control by getting on the right track to wellness. If people are well those costs will go down. Every thing will get better.
